Memorable flights

I guess everyones most memorable flight was their first solo.

In my case it was in the Blanik L13 (a 53 ft wingspan all-metal glider) at
Shobdon in Herefordshire.

The Blanik L13

I was on a 3-day course at the Herefordshire gliding club from Monday to Wednesday. After some flying on Monday

The next day dawned very foggy as it was October, with no flying, and I spent the day walking
in the fog around the entire perimeter of the airfield just for something to do.

However, the next day it brightened up and after a check flight with instructor Dave Carson,
 he said:

"You don't need me now, I think you are ready to  take it up on your own"!

So up I went on tow behind the tug plane and released the tow rope at 2000 feet.
I circled round anxiously watching the altimeter until I was low enough to start my landing circuit.

I came in and made a smooth and successful landing on the paved runway.

So I did it! What a thrill!

It is the custom after the first solo you do 2 more flights on your own. I did, a very memorable day!

The next year, I was on a week course, once more at Shobdon and since I had reached solo standard, after a check flight I was allowed to fly the Blanik once more.

I did a five flights over the week and climbed in thermals on two occasions for over and hour.
This where I learned that to find the best lift it was most effective to fly under the blackest clouds!

I did 8 flights solo in the Blanik

The Swallow

Slingsby Swallow

I had many flights in the Swallow based at the East Sussex Gliding club at Ringmer
The Swallow was an all-wood single seater glider made in Yorkshire. Not a very high performance but easy to handle.
My most memorable flight was on a calm day when there were no thermals. Instead of the usual 2000 ft I took the aerotow and did not cast off until I reached 3000 ft. Instead of the usual bumping and buffeting about, on this day the air was calm and still and I was able to glide steadily without moving the controls at all. I made wide circuits of the area before landing after 20 minutes.

I did 30 flights in the Swallow

The K8

Schleicher K8

My favourite plane! At Ringmer this was the club single seater. Light and easy to fly the K8 was a lovely little glider with a 45ft wingspan. I made many flights at Ringmer my best being a flight of 1 Hour 40 minutes where I reached a height of 4900 ft.

Later, I went on a course at the Gloucestershire Gliding Club at Nympsfield near Stroud, it is on the edge of the Cotswold hills and gliders are able to stay up in the ridge lift when the wind is in the right direction. After a check flight with an instructor they said: "we have 2 k8's - a white one and a
blue one, which one would you like to fly?" - to have a choice of two single seaters to fly - what a treat! I chose the white one and did more than 40 minutes soaring to and fro at about 1200 feet along the edge of the Cotswolds.
Later that week I did try the
blue one, but it had no seat cushion so I had to wear a parachute, but I don't think I would have liked to bail out!

I did 46 flights in the K8

Schleicher K6

Schleicher K6

In the era of mostly wooden gliders the K6 had the best performance with a glide ratio of 32:1
I flew this plane 4 times, but still preferred the K8

In the end I did not continue my gliding,It was just too much effort to travel 40 miles and spend all day waiting to fly and for the weather to be suitable. True, it was always pleasant standing and sitting around on the gliding field waiting and talking to the others, retrieving the gliders after they landed (we used tractors) and driving the launching winch.
The flying had to be organised each day and a "Duty Pilot" was chosen on a rota basis - sometimes I got that job.
I had achieved what I wanted.
I kept a log book of my flying and so I have a permanent record which I can even see today to remind me of a very interesting and pleasant time.
